Reminding that you have to "explode" the Winisis database in Greenstone
in order to access the pdf files as documents in the collection (rather
than simply making a collection from the database of bibliographic data,
the "as is" method. If the name of the corresponding pdf file is in a
field of each Winisis database record, the links between the documents
and the Winisis records can be established automatically by setting the
document_field parameter when exploding. If not, exploding will produce
"dummy" documents which you can easily (but unfortunately manually)
change to the real documents using the "replace function". This is all
explained in the guide on Creating digital libraries based on CDS/ISIS
Concerning display, it is straightforward to display all of the metadata
fields with their tags giving the user the option to click on the
document icon to get the full text. For this you have to develop an
appropriate format statement in the VList format feature (something like
Winisis formatting language. See the CDS/ISIS example collection to see
a model of such a format.
If your pdf files are text based, Greenstone will do a full text index
of the documents. For highlighting of the search hits in the text, you
have the option of displaying highlighted terms directly in the pdf
document (see the section on "Opening PDF files with query terms
course if your scanned files are images, full text searching will not be
possible, and the users will only be able to search in the metadata.
You will be pleased to note that there is a Greenstone Support Network
for the South Asia region and you can visit the site at
http://greenstonesupport.iimk.ac.in. This programme also runs a E-List
to support the professionals with their day-to-day queries. I've
requested the moderator of this list to subscribe you - You are welcome
to post your queries to email@example.com .

> database and scanned pdf file
> Dear all, I am having a winisis data base (about 3000 records) of meta data for reports.
> Each record (mfn) refers one report. Now we are scanning the document to make a pdf file of
> each report for digital library I can build the winisis data base in GS and I can build
> the pdf files separately. I want link the each pdf file for corresponding record mfn in
> Winisis. So that the users can search by author, report number, keywords etc., We want to
> show the meta data retrieval first, and if they want they have to see the scanned image of
> the corresponding pdf file. Can any body give their suggestions to reduce the manual work.
> Kindly suggest us.
