As nobody reacted to this message, I continued to hack about, installing all sorts of gtk++, java, gcc, and similar packages. This seems to have moved forward incrementally. The current problem is suggested by the following console file:

Because of a run-time failure of the Greenstone Librarian, as indicated by the attached console file, I am unable to run the Greenstone Librarian interface under my chosen Linux distribution (Ubuntu Linux).
Please suggest how I might efficiently proceed.
