More Options;

You may still be able to use imageMagick to make thumbnails /extract
metadata manually - this would probably more work than you are willing
to expend on a student project.

The other option is to do the import on a modern machine (any win2000
or greater, Linux or mac OS X would be fine and completely compatible)
, and then copy it to the win98 machine for build'ing. This should
allow your student to work on configuring the collection. (Including
adding metadata, defining classifiers, format etc)

BTW - Modern linux distros run fine on old (win98) machines and can
often [non-destructively]repartition your hard drive without wiping
your windows 98 installation. A good way of breathing new life into an
old machine. (and fully greenstone compatible)
