Hi Cathy,

I believe that when we were testing the Depositor a few months back, we
found a bug that crashed the server. From memory, we fixed this bug for
2.84 (for which only a release candidate is out so far). I am not
certain that this is definitely the same problem, but the result was
initially the same when I was trying to deposit an item.

Do you wish to try out the release candidate to confirm whether it is
not already fixed in the upcoming version of Greenstone 2, or whether it
is still a live bug that we need to look at before the official 2.84
release? If so, the download link is at http://www.greenstone.org/snapshots
Note that if your system is Windows, we think the release candidate
should be okay for basic operations. If you're on Linux and are working
with Microsoft documents, you may need wvware already installed (since
certain libraries were not set up correctly in the Linux 2.84 release
candidate). Unfortunately, the Mac binary on that page is not at all
ready and was being used for internal testing purposes alone. If you
wish to try out a Mac binary, there will be an updated one ready to try
at http://www.greenstone.org/caveat-emptor/ around 1:00 am in the
morning NZ time.
You'll want the one labelled
"Greenstone-2.84-candidate-2011.01.21-MacOS-intel.dmg" that will appear
at that time.

Bear in mind that the release candidates are for trial purposes only, do
not replace your official Greenstone installation with the above (we
will be coming out with a finalised release of Greenstone 2.84 shortly).
We greatly welcome trial testing of the release candidates by Greenstone
users, as it will help in identifying bugs and allow us to fix these.

If the bug you are facing does turn out to be the same as the one I
encountered, it is something that cannot readily be fixed in 2.83
without recompiling source code. Therefore, other than that, if you find
you need to continue to work with the version of Greenstone you are
using, try using the Remote Greenstone server to remotely add documents
to your collection. The instructions for setting your Greenstone up as a
remote server can be found at
http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/2.83_Release_Notes#Working_with_Remote_Greenstone_and_the_GLI-Client
(for Greenstone v2.83). Alternatively, there is a more general and
longer version of this document at
http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Remote_Greenstone

Regards,
Anupama of the Greenstone Team
