Subject [greenstone-devel] Greenstone v2.50 released!
Hello everyone,

The Windows/Linux/Source distributions of Greenstone v2.50 are now
available for download from our sourceforge page:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/greenstone

This is a major release that corresponds to the UNESCO Greenstone v2.50
CD-ROM. It features many improvements to the core Greenstone software,
including a new (and already very popular) PagedImgPlug plugin for
processing sequences of page images, a new classifier that displays a
collage of the images in a collection, provision for incremental updates
of Greenstone in the future, and many, many other improvements and bug
fixes.

For this release UNESCO have translated almost everything into French,
Spanish and Russian.
The items in this release in English, French, Spanish and Russian
include:

- Unix and Windows installers
- Greenstone interface
- Greenstone setup scripts
- Greenstone README file
- Greenstone Perl module strings
- GLI scripts
- GLI README file
- GLI interface
- GLI help text

This release also includes a very large number of improvements to the
Librarian Interface tool. The Greenstone Librarian Interface (GLI) is an
easy-to-use frontend to Greenstone's collection-building functionality.
It provides a graphical, point-and-click interface that allows you to
gather files for your digital library collection, assign metadata to
them, and then design, customize and build your collection. The
Librarian Interface comes as standard in all distributions (uncompiled
in the source distribution, compiled in all the others). It is installed
in a subdirectory of your Greenstone installation called "gli", and
requires a recent version of Java to run (you will be told if you don't
have this, and it is a free download).

If you haven't already tried the Librarian Interface, now is a great
time to do so. On Windows, a shortcut to the Librarian Interface is
automatically added to the Greenstone Digital Library item on the Start
Menu. On other systems, the Librarian Interface can be run by executing
the gli.sh script in the "gli" subdirectory of your Greenstone
installation.

We want to ensure that this software works well for you. Please report
any problems to greenstone@cs.waikato.ac.nz, or one of the mailing
lists.

All the best,

The Greenstone team
