This sounds like you are using macro files from a quite old version
of greenstone with a newer binary. In old versions (before 2.60?)
there was a _textSearchlong_ macro, but when the macro files were tidied
up to use CSS instead of tables, there was also some tidying up
of the macro names too. Recent versions of greenstone have a
_textSearchhelp_ macro instead. The newer versions make it easier for
people to customise the appearance of their collections without having
to figure out how the macro system works.

There are some PDFs that can't easily have the text extracted from them.
Please look at

http://greenstone.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/More_about_plugins#I.27m_having_problems_with_my_PDF_files.21_What.27s_wrong.3F

and see if any of those problems apply to you.
