Yes, its possible. This is what we do when the groupsize option is set
for import.pl.
A single document doc.xml has structure like

<Archive>
<Section>
... maybe nested sections...
</Section>
</Archive>

To add more than one, Just have several Sections at top level:
<Archive>
<Section>
... doc 1 ...
</Section>
<Section>
... doc 2 ...
</Section>
</Archive>

The archives.inf file only needs to list the first document in each file.
