Greenstone is used in over 65 countries around the world. As people can
just download the software for free, or get it from unesco via cdrom, we
have no idea how many installations here are. We have about 6000
downloads per release of Greenstone, but there is no way to tell how
many installations that results in.

You can use any (non hierarchical) metadata standard you like. If you
are using the LIbrarian Interface to build collections, then metadata
sets need to be defined in an XML file before they can be used. There is
a tool (GEMS) which comes as part of the latest release which can be
used for defining new metadata sets.

We are currently looking at extending GEMS and Greenstone to use
hierarchical metadata (ie metadata with subfields).

Not really.
You can add any kind of information to documents using metadata. You can
also control access to documents/collections using passwords.

what do you mean?

Yes, you can customize the (readers) interface relatively easily.
