I've just finished some macro for converting documents in Word
(Word2000 or XP - I could not test it in Word97; If you could - tell
me). This macro resolved some of my problems, you can

-save all doc as doc
-save all documents (Word can open) as HTML,DOC,RTF or TXT Unicode
-keep original names, change format
-insert section tags as used by greenstone
-divide pages
-divide chapters (macro recognizes two ways - all headings Word
can find; OR your defined headings - but this is slower)
-divide pages XOR chapters
-divide both ways

I am afraid I did not check if greenstone picks text inbetween
<Description></Description> - you wil find a text of headings there;
but I did this according to demo files - so, I hope it will be
working.
