Hi Peter,

> What kind of privacy settings does Greenstone have and does one have
the ability to restrict access?
You can restrict access to individual documents as well as entire
collections of documents. See
http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Authentication

> Is Greenstone a repository or a catalog?

Greenstone is software for creating digital libraries. It generates a
repository containing collections of documents you put into it. It
allows searching and browsing of the documents and gives considerable
power in adjusting what features are available for any collection
(including what fields a user can search or browse by).

I am not sure of the technical terms used in library sciences, but in so
far as libraries catalog their resources based on metadata, Greenstone
allows you to assign metadata (or use metadata files of recognised
formats) to attach to the documents you put into it.

from a record?

Generally, you house them inside your Greenstone digital library
repository, but you can also link to original documents located elsewhere.

For instance, since Greenstone supports OAI, a digital library you
created with Greenstone can be set up as an OAI server. It can be made
serve resources that are either inside your Greenstone repository or
which are elsewhere on the web.

If you wish to have a better idea of what Greenstone is capable of, look
through the tutorial headings at
http://wiki.greenstone.org/wiki/index.php/Tutorial_exercises

Anupama
