Hi Sunyeen,

I think Greenstone 2.83 was made to be compatible with Windows Vista,
but not Windows 7 (at least, it wasn't tested with Windows 7). It's the
intention that the next release of Greenstone 2 (2.84) will work with
Windows 7.

Another point that may be relevant to you is that Greenstone 2.83 is not
compatible with 64-bit windows machines. One member of the Greenstone
team is working on addressing this.

So far, we found that the start-up scripts, which launch Greenstone
programs, are not geared for Windows 7. This is especially the case if
your Greenstone or important Environment Paths used by Greenstone are
located in folders containing "(" or ")" in their names, which are
characters that occur in some newly-introduced system folder names on
Windows 7.

However, as you have access to a Windows XP, you could try installing
Greenstone 2.83 on that and put a copy of your Greenstone 2.72
installations's "collect" folder into your Greenstone 2.83 folder.

I don't know how compatible 2.72 is with 2.83, but since you are now
working with a copy, you can be brave and run 2.83's Greenstone
Librarian Interface application (GLI) and use this to try to open these
copied collections in GLI. If that works, you can then try to reimport
and rebuild these collections from scratch in 2.83.

Regards,
Anupama
