You are right that the Greenstone 3 format statements are very different
from those of Greenstone 2. GS3 uses XML. There are developers working
on tools to make it easier for everyone to compose and customise format
statements for Greenstone 3, but that will be in a future release.

We do have a Greenstone 3 manual that briefly covers the topic and that
may be helpful for you to understand it better.

Another thing that could help is to look at the existing XML Greenstone
format statements in GLI and try to understand how each XML element
relates to the display in the browser.
