This sounds like you are running it remotely, via an ssh session?
If so, you need to make sure that your ssh connection is "forwarding
X11" for graphical applications to work.

Have a look at the "X Connection Forwarding" section on the
http://www.wlug.org.nz/SSHNotes page for more information about getting
remote X forwarding working over an ssh connection.
