The collection list macro (_homeextra_) is defined in the C++ code - in src/recpt/pageaction.cpp - in the set_homeextra_macro(). You can edit this method and recompile greenstone. In the next release of greenstone due this week or early next week, you can change the number of columns of collections you have, (eg add 'SiteFormat HomePageCols 1' to the etc/main.cfg file ) and if you choose only one column, it ends up being left aligned, not center aligned.
