You can do this with format statements, by adding an {If} statement around the [icon] element and testing on the presence of UnknownPlug metadata.

For example, if your list format statement is a basic one like:

    format VList "<td valign=top>[link][icon][/link]</td><td valign=top>[Title]</td>"

You would change it to:

    format VList "<td valign=top>[link]{If}{[UnknownPlug], <img src='/gsdl/web/images/icon.gif'>, [icon]}[/link]</td><td valign=top>[Title]</td>"

(In other words, you are replacing "[icon]" with "{If}[UnknownPlug], <img src='/gsdl/web/images/icon.gif'>, [icon]}").

This assumes that your UnknownPlug icon is called icon.gif and lives in the "images" folder of your Greenstone installation.
