Preliminary Remarks

The present material includes 4 selected instruction examples by means of which methods of making different pinned joints can be practised:

- pinned joints for fastening
- pinned joints for holding
- pinned joints for securing
- pinned joints for fitting.

As pinned joints may serve a variety of functions, simple joints were chosen as samples that permit to check the function of the pins after assembly. The preworked parts which the trainees are expected to assemble shall merely be accurate in size and angle. In order to produce usable practising workpieces the dimensions given in the “Support” example and the “Container with Lid” example may be modified to suit the conditions in the workshop, which may be different from those assumed here.

For each instruction example, the necessary materials, tools, measuring and testing means, as well as auxiliary accessories are specified to facilitate the preparation and execution of the work. Furthermore, the previous knowledge is given that is required to carry out the exercises.

The working drawing and sequences of operations which are attached to the respective exercises shall help the trainees to accomplish them independently.
