Instruction Example 32.4.: Making a Container with Lid

Practise the making of pinned joints for fastening by using close-tolerance grooved pins and grooved taper pins.

Material

- 12 grooved taper pins 4 × 20, part (1)
- 4 close-tolerance grooved pins 4 × 20, part (2)

Tools

Drilling machine with accessories, marking gauge, centre punch, locksmith’s hammer, aluminium hammer, drill Æ 4 mm, triangular scraper.

Measuring and testing means

Vernier calliper, try square

Auxiliary accessories

Support, machine grease, clamp

Necessary previous knowledge

Manual material working - measuring, testing, marking punching, drilling.

Sequence of operations

Comments



1. Prepare the workplace.
Make working material available.

Check for completeness.



2. Check the prepared material for accuracy in dimensions and angles.

Clean and straight edges.



3. Clamp together one front part and the bottom part of the container.

Use a clamp.



4. Mark, punch and drill and deburr the bore hole with a triangular scraper.

When “drilling” is specified in the following operations, it includes marking, punching and deburring.



5. Apply some grease to the grooved taper pin (1) and insert it into its hole. Remove the clamp.

Apply two or three blows with a hammer.



6. Clamp the pinned parts together with the second front part. Drill where marked and insert the grooved taper pins (1)

Check for accuracy in angle.



7. Clamp both side parts together with the pinned parts. Drill where marked and insert the grooved taper pins (1).

Align correctly.



8. Put on the lid part. Clamp it together with the container and drill.




9. Remove the lid part and drive in the grooved taper pins (2) from above.




10. Put on the lid an check, if it is snugly fitting.

If the pins jam in their holes, make the holes wider by re-reaming.
