Looking for a good idea? In this age of information overload, people need a 'one-stop shop' for catching up with the latest thinking in their fields. Hence, the reason for launching Developing Ideas, a bi-monthly intelligence gathering service for decision-makers in sustainable development. We draw on the cutting-edge resources and international contacts of Canada's International Institute for Sustainable Development to bring you the inside track on SD. And we map out our findings in short, succinct sections to give our readers breathing space. Our philosophy: less is more.

In this our first issue, Developing Ideas launches a number of departments. Developing Ideas tracks the 5 hottest new thoughts from around the world - together with a 'not-so-hot' list of ideas currently being floated. WordWatch tracks the new buzzwords in sustainability. Virtual Ideas points to a universe of resource info on the Internet. In Depth pinpoints key print references. Press Review highlights some of the best and worst of the recent media coverage. And LitScan rounds out each issue with further reading on our hottest Developing Idea.

Based on our formal and informal surveys of this quarter's latest literature and top opinion-leaders, one trend stands out above all: People are asking how they can maintain the bonds of community without being swallowed up in the global economy. Our answers to this question will determine the shape of our lives in '2K' - the year of the approaching millenium.

Enjoy Developing Ideas.
