Carnivore and herbivore teeth

Lesson: La nutrition des carnivores et des herbivores

Rationale: Use various analogies to demonstrate the functions of the different types of teeth.

Materials:

dagger or knife

scissors

2 flat rocks

chalk

grass

Procedure:

Canines-Use a dagger or sharp knife to show that carnivores use the canines for killing their prey.

Molaires-For carnivores use the two flat rocks and demonstrate their ability to crush by crushing chalk. For herbivores, use the same rocks but show grinding action with grass. Also point out that grinding wears down the rocks (teeth) by showing the dust produced.

Molaires carnassières-Use scissors to show the cutting ability.
