Agrecol Development Information

c/o Okozentrum

CH-4438 Langenbruck/Switzerland

Tel. 062 / 60 14 20(60 14 60)

The information center Agrecol Development Information aims at promoting, expanding and coordinating initiatives for a long-term self-reliant and integrative agricultural production in developing regions on this world. It is launching a network between similar institutions and connecting world-wide the corresponding projects, groups and initiatives, experts and consultants, training opportunities and research institutes etc. For this purpose it works in the main languages.

People and groups in both the "first" and the "third" world possess a rich know-how and a wide experience of cultivation methods and ways of production in tropical and subtropical climates. These methods tend to

- maintain, improve and re-establish the fertility of the soil and a balanced ecological system

- be independent from external inputs

- improve the productivity of the soil - serve the needs and increase the self-reliance of the local population

- not stress the environment and posterity

- be socially and economically appropriate.

This know-how is lacking in. many places and is urgently needed.

Agrecol Development Information aims at helping to make these experiences accessible to a wider range of people.

A documentation center on relevant projects, initiatives, research and selected literature is to be set up.

Information and literature is collected, arranged and prepared in cooperation with experts, groups and institutions.

Together with the know-how of the group of experts who have initiated Agrecol Development Information, all these materials will be the background of the "Ask-and-Answer Service" which is to be created. It will answer requests and arrange contacts and consultants as a back-stop service.

Oral and written information as well as other services are on principle free for individuals, groups and projects. For larger orders from noncharitable or commercial companies and organisations an adequate contribution to our costs has to be charged.

When transmitting information we will take into consideration the wishes of those who are the information-source. This is of special importance when information is susceptible to inadequate interpretation or implementation or if the conception of a particular project itself requires a certain confidentiality.

A group of experts from projects, universities and development organisations in Germany, Holland, England, France and Switzerland initiated Agrecol Development Information in autumn 1982. It is a member of l.F.O.A.M., the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements.

In September 1983 Agrecol Development Information took off.

For at least three years it will be financed by churches, private and government organisations in Germany and Switzerland. Agrecol Development Information plans to have its activities critically evaluated after a three-year period and to decide in accordance with its partners all over the world how and where the work is then to be continued in the most effective way.

Agrecol Development Information is attached to the Center for Appropriate Technology and Social Ecology in Langenbnuck/Switzerland, a team of independent technicians and scientists who are commited to ecology.

They are involved in elaborating approaches to a harmonious relationship between man and nature which promotes life instead of destroying it.

The Center is located between-the three cities Zurich, Berne and Basle and can be reached from there within a 1«-hour trip by public transport (railway, bus).M

The "Centro de Tecnologia Apropiada pare la Vivienda Popular", CeTAVip (Center for Appropriate Technology for Popular Housing), is the executive branch of the "Consejo Inter-lnstitucional pare la Coordinaci¢n de Programas de Viviendas, Inc.", CII-VIVIENDAS (Inter-lnstitutional Council for the Coordination of Housing Programs, Inc.).

Philosophy

Today, nearly all of the world's developing countries are afflicted by increasingly serious problems which all of us have recognized and acknowledged. Many of these have their roots in certain antiquated and imcomplete suppositions which, instead of being adapted to our reality, were improvised on the basis of experiences made in the industrialized countries.

Our objective is not merely to discard conventional approaches. Instead, it is to study existing conditions in order to formulate development plans which correspond to the actual characteristics of each location, region or country.

To this end, CeTAVip believes that Appropriate Technology is the best means of implementing our own solutions to our problems. This alternative is the instrument of development best suited to the needs of countries like ours.

A complementary aspect and inseparable element of Appropriate Technology is the concept of integrated development. This is an essential requirement, and any program must consider the elements which are necessary to satisfy the basic human needs. These include: nutrition, shelter, education, health, energy, recreation, employment, etc. Each of these affects or is affected by some other, and all of them must be present and adequately integrated.

CeTAVip is working to achieve a more complete, balanced and just world, and its programs concentrate on this goal.

Activities

CeTAVip conducts three basic programs:

Promotional program and dissemination of information

4. Lectures aimed at the professional sector.

5. Courses for low-income groups.
