| The impact of RAMP studies in the field of education |
Question 14 invited participants to list subjects or areas of interest they would like to see in upcoming RAMP studies. In the area of policy and planning, topics include archives networks (France), programmes for cooperation in archival development (Costa Rica), archival development in the Pacific region (Australia)5 and the importance of acknowledging the relevance of government records on the part of decision-makers in developing countries (Nigeria). Studies that examine the role of the archivist in current or active archives management would be appreciated by Spain and France, especially those examining cost-benefit analysis in records management (Nigeria).
Topics of academic interest include: the history of archives (Brazil), the evolution of archival principles and methods since the 19th century (Australia), as well as administrative history relevant to the management of modern archives (Australia).
Participants from Portugal and Canada believe that future RAMP endeavors should focus on norms and on the application of archival principles; very broad interests indeed. Spain, on the other hand, is more specific in its choice of topics: retention schedules, archives surveys, and appraisal. Studies dealing with access and dissemination would be welcomed by both Brazil and Spain, especially those focussing on archive exhibits (Brazil), and on «marketing» (Morocco). Participants from Brazil, Morocco and Nigeria appear concerned over the qualifications, needs and behavior of archives users and clienteles. Archives management technologies and automation are other topics of interest mentioned by our participants (Brazil, Canada, Israel and Portugal).
Document supports are of interest to a few participants: France mentions architectural archives, Portugal refers to audio-visual materials, while Switzerland and Tunisia point to «new» archives, namely computerized and electronic materials, in the case of which legal substantiation must be addressed (Tunisia). Moreover, French and Moroccan participants suggest further studies be oriented towards record group management or the processing of particular documents: financial documents, accounting, judicial and notarial archives, personnel records, insurance and business related archives, etc. Other specialized themes include heraldry and genealogy (Brazil).
Topics of professional scope are of interest to Argentina which requests a study on the qualifications, attributions and ethics of archivists. Canada would like the topic of international exchange programmes in training to be addressed, while Costa Rica suggests reporting on graduate teaching degrees in vocational training as well as guidelines and methods specifically geared towards the teaching of archival science. As for Switzerland, research guidelines and methods in information science would be welcomed.
