Location: Batha prefecture (province), capital ATI

Capital: Oum-Hadjer. On main road N'Djamena - Abeche 600 km from N'djamena and 120 Km from Abeche. 8000 citizens

Districts(cantons): 10 districts (map 1)

Area: 35000 km2

Population: Approximately 200,000. Density: 5.7 people per km2. 58 per cent of population are more or less mobile (arabs); 42 per cent of population are sedentary (non-arable population)

Language: Arabic; the original languages of the sedentary population no longer exist

Religion: Islam

Government services: Veterinary service: Central post in Oum-Hadjer and 5 district posts. Agricultural service: Central post in Oum-Hadjer no district posts. Medical centre in Oum-Hadjer, 6 district posts. Grain security depot in Oum-Hadjer. Sugar commercialisation government depot in Oum-Hadjer

Development projects: PDR-Batha, Dutch regional development programme, stopped interventions in June 1991. FAO, reforestation programme. UNICEF, infant vaccination programme

Rainfall: 200-450mm

Animal population (1986): 630,000 cattle; 850,000 small ruminants; 24,000 horses; 70,000 camels;

31,000 donkeys

Animal density (1986): 13ha/UBT

Water table: South of river Batha: 3-lOm. North of river Batha: 50-9Om

Ishtirak project, actual situation (February 1991): Number of PAs: 36 PAs with a total of 908 members; 7 women PAs with a total of 251 members
