· IF THE CHILD HAS SEVERE PNEUMONIA or VERY SEVERE FEVER DISEASE, REFER URGENTLY, if possible. Give the carer three doses of amoxycillin and tell her to continue giving the doses at the right time until the child reaches the hospital.

· TEACH THE CARER HOW TO GIVE TABLETS AT HOME (see TREATMENT BOX 6).

· ADVISE THE CARER MOTHER ON HOME CARE:

· Give extra fluids: increase breast-feeding. Give more drinks.
· Continue feeding: do not stop feeding a sick child. Encourage the child to eat.
· When to return immediately: if the child:

- is not able to drink or breast-feed OR,
- drinks or breast-feeds poorly OR,
- becomes worse OR,
- develops fever or fever increases.

· When to return: tell the carer to return in two days.

· GIVE FOLLOW-UP CARE FOR PNEUMONIA TWO DAYS AFTER THE INITIAL VISIT:

· Assess the child fully using ASSESS and CLASSIFY CHARTS.
· Give treatment for any classifications found.
· If the child is worse or no better, continue treatment and try to refer.
· If the child is getting better, advise the carer to not stop the treatment and continue to give all the tablets.

· IF YOU CANNOT REFER THE CHILD:

· Visit at least once a day until the child's health improves. At each visit:

· make sure the child is taking the medicine correctly;
· encourage the carer to give plenty of fluids and proper feeding.
