This set of manuals is the result of the effort and collaboration of engineers, architects, physicians, and health sector administrators whose expertise and technical contribution enabled their production. PAHO wishes to thank Omar Dario Cardona A., Chief of the Engineering Division of Ingeniar Ltda. in Bogotá, Colombia, for his contribution and technical coordination and to his collaborators: Jorge Eduardo Hurtado G., Juan Pablo Sarmiento P., and Humberto Fonseca M. for their advice in the elaboration of these publications.
OP. the cover: The earthquake that ravaged Mexico City on September 19, 1985, was the strongest one recorded in Latin America in the last hundred years. It killed or injured thousands of people and caused severe structural damage. The institutions of the health sector were also very badly hit, including the General Hospital of the National Medical Center of the Mexican Social Security Institute, shown in the photo.
