Introduction

This handbook consists of practical guidelines for evaluating water- and sanitation-related hygiene practices. Hygiene practices are routine actions, commonly associated with cleanliness. Evaluation may refer to a systematic assessment carried out during the early stages of project planning, halfway through project implementation, or at the end of project activities. An evaluation of hygiene practices can be done for the purposes of project planning, monitoring, or final assessment of the project's impact.

Evaluation

· For planning intervention
· For monitoring implementation
· For assessing the impact of intervention

If the objective is to plan or to design effective interventions for hygiene improvements, this handbook can be used as part of the project planning activities. If your project is at the planning stage, and you wish to include in the project hygiene promotion, education, or communication, this handbook may help you to gather systematic baseline information, to interpret or understand it, and then apply it when implementing your project. If you are already implementing a hygiene promotion project and you want to see whether you are going in the right direction, or whether you need to change direction to achieve better results, you can use this handbook for monitoring purposes. If your project had already collected systematic information on hygiene practices at the beginning, identified those to be targeted for improvement, and worked to bring about change in hygiene practices over a period of time, then this handbook can help you to measure change in hygiene practices and thereby assess the impact of your project. This handbook can therefore be used for a variety of evaluation purposes depending on the project objectives that are to be met.
