Socialising

Mentions going to dancing lessons in Morrinsville in her third form year. Was not allowed to attend dances in Te Aroha on a Saturday night.

"My father considered that quite a den of iniquity as far as he was concerned...One night my boyfriend arrived to pick me up to take me out, and Dad was being carried down the steps on a stretcher as he was coming in and "Don't you take my daughter to the Te Aroha dances"

Attended Catholic Youth dances that were held at the local halls on a Sunday night. Dancing was the ballroom style: waltz, foxtrot, valeta. Remembers neighbours and people from the local district gathering to play competition tennis on Saturday mornings. Central activity for the community. Recalls a dance organised by Kings College and St. Cuthberts. Missed out because she was sick with the Asian Flu.
