Traditional family holiday at Mt Maunganui. "Never go there without stopping on the Kaimai's for a drink from the stream that ran into a horse trough". Roads difficult to travel, journey invariably long.
Cars fuelled by gas. Car sickness inevitable. No `short cuts' to the Mount. We never went out to eat. People who dined at hotels were usually guests.
When General Motors personnel were invited to our houses for a meal they found it an unusual experience - hopefully pleasant. This was unique to New Zealand; people entertained at home.
Mr Apthorp - Music Teacher at High School an influence. Had a very shiny pair of shoes and a shiny bald head. A meticulous teacher.
