Background

Born in Scotland in 1938.

Memories of impact of WWII -queuing for goods, no butter, using powdered eggs. Brought up in West Calder, mining district, father worked in shale mine. Details of war memories, blackouts, gas masks, extended family away fighting. Parents decided to come to NZ in 1946, travelled on the `Dominion Monarch' (troop ship),
