Homelife

Chores- dishes, making her own bed, enjoyed mowing the lawns and cutting the hedges,

scrub neighbours veranda.

Went to church with family, attended Sunday School and sang anniversary solo every year, later taught Sunday School, went to Bible Class. Memories of school dances, allowed to attend `big' dances at 14, Guy Fawkes nights,

"...always seemed to rain on bonfire night"

Remembers good community spirit, revolved around the school- `bring and buys', school concert, Women's Institute concert (details about concerts). Discusses domestic appliances, hand washing with copper. Family holidays at Hikurangi, Auckland with `honorary' aunts and uncles.

"We made our own entertainment"

Card and board games, radio. Details of travelling/holidays. Discussion on clothing- `homemade' by dressmaker across the road using patterns from the newspaper.

"Saturday was either pikelet or scone day for lunch"

Mother a good baker.
