Smoking and Drinking

Ivan never smoked, but his sister tried smoking briefly "to be in with the others" at training college.

Alcohol was not sold after 6pm and you had to be 21 to enter a pub. Didn't really try sneaking into pub, instead drank soft drinks, and ginger beer, with alcohol for special occasions.

Travelled on a train to Auckland for holidays about three times a year. Visited relatives, the Zoo, Museum, Civic Theatre, and photographic equipment shops. For family holidays went camping in Tauranga - every year the car would overheat as they drove up the Kaimais.

Loved swimming and frequently got sunburnt, unaware of cancer risks.
