Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Vitamin B6, (Pyridoxine), Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)
Plasma levels of the B vitamins have been related to diverse
pregnancy outcomes with varying results. The recognised potential of
homocysteine in playing a role in pre-eclampsia has also triggered research in
the role of vitamin B12 in pregnancy. Do date no controlled supplementation
studies are available to prove that supplements are needed during pregnancy
unless in situations where there is clinical evidence of a specific deficiency
where the treatment is needed to correct the clinical picture. Table 1 gives an
overview of the available
evidence.
