The US has at least 190K information technology jobs open,
and at least 10% of high-tech jobs go unfilled. CIS bachelor's
degree awards dropped 42% from 1986 to 1994, and engineering
degrees dropped 18%. With the Internet job boom, the shortage is
likely to worsen. However, many students in non-CS disciplines
are now learning computer skills. CIS master's and doctorate
degrees are up 29% and 135% since 1986, according to the Dept. of
Education. And universities serving Silicon Valley have been
bucking the trend, turning out increasing numbers of computer
scientists and engineers. [Rory J. O'Connor, SJM, 26Feb97, 1C.]
A Canadian study has found that high-tech firms average 31%
professionals and 10% unskilled workers. In low-tech companies,
the numbers are 15% managers and 36%. Of the new jobs created
by computers, 53% go to managers and professionals -- including
[or overlapping?] 15% to engineering, architecture, science, and
information systems, and 21% to mathematicians, systems analysts,
and programmers. Clerical positions were nearly 23% of the new
jobs, but 60% of the [lesser number of] jobs lost to automation.
