David Jensen has joined us, after determining that
the Communique's job listings last month were quite thorough.
David is an analyst at the Office of Technology Assessment,
a non-partisan support agency of the US Congress. His 1992
dissertation work at Washington University (St. Louis)
was in machine learning and statistics; recent work at OTA
analyzed AI technologies to detect money laundering.
"OTA has been slated for elimination by the House and Senate
Budgets, over the objections of several prominent members of
Congress (from both parties) and a large number of science
and technical organizations." David is therefore looking for
a research position in machine learning or knowledge discovery
in databases. See Peter Stangl, director of the Lane Library at Stanford
University Medical Center, needs some help tracking down
a recent news announcement. The report is that an HMO
or third-party medical insurer has contracted for access to
MEDLINE and other health-related bibliographic databases
for each of its healthcare providers, to save costs in
the long run. If you've heard of this, or know who might know,
please contact Incidentally, Peter joined CI as a "degenerate case,"
in a group of two professionals for the price of one.
The next step up is three or four professionals (plus students
and staff) for the price of two. Give our log2 rate some thought
if you have same-site friends or co-workers who could benefit.
(Larger departments will usually do better with our new flat rate.
Ask for details.)
I'm could use some help with news filtering. If you can
commit to about an hour per day of net surfing, I'll supply
instructions, Usenet newsgroup filters to match your interests,
and a free subscription to the Communique. Other Computists
would benefit from the good job ads and postings that you find.
I also need someone to condense job postings and/or journal
and discussion list announcements, for about an hour per day
(or a day per week) at $10/hour (negotiable). Free subscription
included. Two people might split the work, if the time commitment
is too much. Flexible hours, and you needn't reside in the US.
Good English skills are required -- to cut to the essence of
technical jargon -- but the essential requirement is interest in
AI culture. I'll supply the raw material and do the final edit.
