Life can be tough. Jeffrey Miller spent 15 months in McDonald's franchise trainee program, at no salary, before they turned him down. [SJM, 4/24/94.] (He may be out less money than a PhD who can't get a job, or even one who _does_ get a job. Apprenticeships at no pay are not unheard of, and may sometimes be better than postdoc employment. Another good approach is to take _any_ job at a good company, then work your way up when they get to know you.)
