Life can be tough. Jeffrey Miller spent 15 months in McDonald's franchise trainee program, at no salary, before they turned him down. Apprenticeships at no pay are not unheard of, and may sometimes be better than postdoc employment. Another good approach is to take _any_ job at a good company, then work your way up when they get to know you.)
