IEEE Bay Area talks this May include time-varying ARMA filters for music synthesis; advances in fuzzy logic, neural networks, and intelligent control; a communication-theory framework for document recognition; automatic modulation recognition; consulting; starting your own business; and storefronts on the Internet. Santa Clara Valley Engineering Management Society has Scott McGregor of SCO talking about virtual software companies, as SCO seeks partnerships with "best of breed" developers of any size rather than doing the development in-house. [IEEE Grid, 5/94.] (If you need a job, attend professional meetings and work the crowd for business cards. Then call each contact during the week to seek leads to others who might have leads to jobs. If that doesn't work, call back in a few weeks to see if they've thought of anyone else. I don't know if calls or email work better. Avoid sending resumes or taking much of anyone's time, and send thank-you notes to everyone.)

Don't forget that you can sign up for my APJ distribution of applied jobs that don't make it into the Communique. These include CS and MIS teaching positions, research support, graphics programming, short-term contracts, etc. The [unedited] announcements take about 32KB per week. Most are culled from the thousands of software positions on misc.jobs.offered. (I distribute them for free, as an extension of the Usenet newsgroup system.)
