IJCNN has extended its Supplementary Poster Session deadline to the end of September. [Michael P. Perrone (mpp@cns.brown.edu), connectionists, 8/21.]
Stephen O has surrendered, and has had his name legally changed to Stephen Oh. Modern bank, credit-card, and motor- vehicle software just couldn't deal with his Korean name. [AP, SJ Mercury, 8/28.] (Is this discrimination by national origin?)
Who's wooing whom? At a recent meeting between IBM and Apple chip designers, the IBM folks wore blue jeans and the Apple engineers showed up in suits. [Tom Schmitz, SJ Mercury, 8/28.]
Bob Basso is out publicizing his new book, This Job Should Be FUN! (Bob Adams Inc., 1991). In an informal survey of 274 San Jose workers, he found only 1.8% willing to say that their workplaces are "open, fun." More than half called their work "dull, boring," and 14.6% chose "a prison." Nearly 96% thought they could be more productive if they had more fun. [Tung Yin, SJ Mercury, 8/23.]
Calstate campuses are cutting back this year. Chico is losing 259 temporary instructors and 96 permanent faculty, some with tenure. San Jose State is losing 300 temporary and part-time positions (152 FTE), but no tenured faculty. 500 SJS classes will be cut, and professors will be urged to fill all the chairs in their classrooms. Teaching load is already at four courses per semester, vs. the national average of three. [Tom Philp and Michelle Guido, SJ Mercury, 8/13.]
Successful entrepreneurs work an average of 60 to 70 hours per week. Either more or less work is a prelude to burnout or failure. [David Bowen, Software Success, 8/91. From the National Home Business Report, Summer '91.]
