The "Internet game archive" is on ftp.uml.edu, and temporarily on ftp2.uml.edu. If you have a 486 or fast 386 processor, try the DOOM action game in msdos/Gamis/ID. Many people have also been downloading Blake Stone and Duke Nukem II for the holidays. [Bob Cowles (chaos-request@pelican.cit.cornell.edu), Chaos Corner, 12/29/93.]

Barney Pell's METAGAMER program derives strategic knowledge from the rules of new or traditional games -- chess, checkers, tic-tac-toe, Chinese chess, Shogi, etc. METAGAMER does not learn from experience, but its analysis of rule sets derives heuristics (e.g., point values for pieces) that are similar to those used by experts. Pell's UCambridge thesis may be requested from tech- reports@cl.cam.ac.uk or FTP'd as thesis.ps.Z from users/bdp on ftp.cl.cam.ac.uk. A few copies may also be available from pell@ptolemy.arc.nasa.gov. [comp.ai, 1/6/94. David Joslin.]
