4.6 Transfusion recipients
Inputs describing estimates of HIV prevalence among transfusion
recipients among the main wards receiving blood products and the percentage of
transmission recipients not surviving to discharge. This input is used to
estimate the numbers receiving blood products that are already HIV infected.
Clearly, such people cannot be infected by infected blood products. As there is
likely to be a degree of uncertainty associated with the HIV prevalence
estimates, the model requires low, medium high estimates for each ward. These
ranges are then used to obtain low, medium and high estimates of the numbers of
HIV infections averted and surviving to discharge as a result of the provision
of safe blood products.
