|Directory of Agricultural Research Projects in Uganda (ARIS, 1998, 388 p.)|
This Directory of Agricultural Research Projects in Uganda, the first of its kind provides details on completed and on-going research carried out by the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) and its collaborators such as Makerere University. Details include research subject, research leader and co-workers, institute conducting research, date of implementation, completion and funding. The Directory is generated from the National Current Agricultural Research Information database (CARIN), which is part of the global network of the Current Agricultural Research Information System (CARIS), comprising of national agricultural research centres, regional institutions or international agencies, coordinated by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations.(FAO)
The mandate of NARO is to undertake, promote and co-ordinate research in all aspects of crops, fisheries, forestry and livestock. Therefore information on research activities is vital in formulating coherent research policies, planning and management of agricultural research. It facilitates managers to evaluate completed and on-ongoing research work and identify major gaps and deficiencies at national and international level and areas suitable for international cooperation.
In view of this a national network, the National Current Agricultural Research Information System (CARIN) was established at the Agricultural Research Information Service (ARIS) in 1989. It has continued to develop as a result of remarkable effort at local agricultural research institutions in Uganda and international cooperation especially with FAO.
The contributions of FAO and of all the national agricultural research institutions and scientists to this directory are appreciated.
I am glad that the directory has come out at a time when we are marking a century of agricultural research and development as an indication of the contribution of NARO towards this noble cause.
