|Political Parties and Democracy in Tanzania (Dar Es Salaam University Press, 1994, 228 p.)|
Political Parties and Democracy in Tanzania is the first comprehensive study on the political parties in the country during this age of transition to multiparty politics. In their first book. Towards Multiparty Politics in Tanzania (1992), the authors analysed trends leading to the legalization of opposition in Tanzania in 1992. Since then, the authors of the current book have made an in-depth study of the parties and this is the outcome of that study. It details the foundational basis of the new parties in both historical and present context and analyses their organizational set ups, policies and programmes.
The new parties are also examined in terms of their impact on central organs of state, on public policy and how they attempt to link up with civil society.
Together with the new parties, the authors also unravel processes in incumbent party by analysing the various organizational and methodological changes that has characterized it during this age of multipartism.
MAX MMUYA and AMON CHALIGHA are both Senior Lecturers in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Dar es Salaam. They have been very close partners in monitoring the transition from one party to multiparty politics in Tanzania. This is their third publication on that democratization process.
