The population explosion, beleaguered economies and unwise use of imported technology have placed unmanageable burdens on the environment and social services in Africa. National and regional strategies to reduce environmental problems of crop production in Africa are suggested. It is urgued that technologies should only be encouraged if they ensure sustainable socioeconomic development.

AGROVOC: AFRICA SOUTH OF SAHARA; LAND PRODUCTIVITY; SUSTAINABILITY; INTENSIFICATION; FARM INPUTS; ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.
Current agricultural practices in Sub-Saharan Africa are not sustainable. They lead to constant degradation of the environment resource base and of the environment. Moreover, their productivity is low. Sustainability can be enhanced through a wide range of biological, physical, socio-economic and legal determinants that can lead to rapid improvements. Increased Sustainability must be achieved through increased production on currently available land. This will require higher input use. The concept of low external input sustainable agriculture can be misleading in that respect; instead, efficient input use should be pursued. Current government subsidies should be redirected to the introduction of sustainable agricultural production methods.
