A study to illucidate bird species associated with rice at DohoRice Scheme identified three major bird species namely, the village weavers Ploceus cuculatus, the red headed quelea, Quelea erythrops, the red billed quelea, Quelea quelea and two minor ones Quelea cardinalis and Euplectes axillaris. The most important pest was P. cuculatus.

The Olweny Swamp Rice Irrigation Project (OSRIP) is a 5 year project sponsored by the African Development Bank (ADB), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the Uganda Government. The first feasibility study was made in 1982 and a review mission was sent to update it in 1991. The review has outlined new directions to overcome the limitations of the existing plans. Aspects considered include: technical design, Type of cultivation, involvement of farmers, scheme management and the expected results.
