The important role of education and Research in promoting the development of food science and technology in Uganda is discussed. Informal and professional education in the field of Food Science and Technology are seen to be very vital in promoting this sector through creating awareness about the importance of good nutrition and training the manpower needed to effectively develop the food processing industries in Uganda. Coordinated Research in food science and technology which should be supported by a national Research policy is proposed in order to improve in the production of raw materials and technologies and the generation of new or improved food products.

The contribution of university based Research to solving Local farming problems is a major area of debate in developing countries. A case study of Makerere Univ. Institute Kabanyolo was done to ascertain the nature of Research done there and to assess the institutes impact on farming practices on surrounding areas. Most Research programmes were found to cover commodities and problems that had a bearing on the institutes surrounding and the country. However, only a few of the Research programmes had yielded technologies that could be applied to farmers. Moreover, the few farmer usable technologies at the institute were not widely adopted among the farmers studied. Most of the potential adopters were not aware of their existence. The institute could improve the utility of its Research through adaptive Research and strengthening linkages with agricultural Research institutions outside the University.
