People contract cholera from drinking water or eating food contaminated with cholera organisms. Prevention is based on reducing the chances of ingesting vibrios. When cholera appears in a community, efforts must be intensified to promote the sanitary disposal of human waste, the provision of safe water, and safe practices in handling food (see section 3). In addition, the measures described in sections 7.1 to 7.3 should be implemented.
