CARIBBEAN CONFERENCE ON NATURAL DISASTERS: VOLCANOES, EARTHQUAKES, STORMS AND FLOODS - OCTOBER 11-15,1993
With the slogan "Improving Natural Hazard Awareness and Reduction in the Circum-Caribbean Region," the University of the West Indies is promoting this activity to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Seismic Research Unit as an IDNDR activity.
Among the concerns culled from the responses to the First Call was that the conference include other risks such as storms and floods. Also, the slogan "Stop Disasters: Focus on Schools and Hospitals" was adopted to be highlighted on the 13th of October. One important aspect of the meeting will be that the Caribbean participants review their national IDNDR agendas and outline their IDNDR, Programmes and local activities under this framework as preparation for the World Conference on Disasters.

COLOMBIA AN EFFORT TO UNIFY CRITERIA
Motivated by the World Conference to be held in Japan in 1994, the Colombian Government is convening a "Latin American Conference on Disastre Reduction" to be held between 21 and 24 of March, 1994, in Cartagena de Indias. This will provide an excellent opportunity for institutions, governments, NGOs and other agencies to exchange experiences in disaster mitigation and prevention, as well as to prepare a regional approach for the World Conference. AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE
The Colombian Engineers Society, with the collaboration of other similar institutions, will hold the "FIRST PANAMERICAN SYMPOSIUM ON BUILDING MATERIALS IN EARTHQUAKE-PRONE ZONES". The purpose is to diffuse the latest advances in the engineering and building material fields to areas of the Americas prone to seismic activity. Participants must represent public or private sectors of design and construction fields, or be architects, professors, or accredited students. Nationals and foreigners alike are invited.
