6.2 PRESENTATION

Consider the possible presence of infection with every woman who has complications of abortion. The following signs and symptoms indicate that either local or generalized infection (septicaemia) is very likely:

SIGNS

SYMPTOMS

chills or sweats (rigors) fever

history of interference with the pregnancy

foul-smelling vaginal discharge

abdominal pain

distended abdomen

IUD in place

rebound tenderness

prolonged bleeding

slightly low blood pressure (mild hypotension)

general discomfort; flu-like symptoms (malaise)
