Sorting
The objective of sorting is to separate the pharmaceuticals into
separate categories for which different disposal methods are required. The
separation should be made into those that can be safely used and returned to the
pharmaceutical supply system and those that require disposal by different
methods. For example, controlled drugs (e.g. narcotics), antineoplastic drugs
and antibiotics all require special methods of disposal. Substantial investment
in human resources may be required for identifying and separating
pharmaceuticals.
