AZCompactList does this - it groups things with the same metadata values into a folder in the list, just like you want. documents that do not have common metadata values will appear in the top list.

classify AZCompactList -metadata Subject

it has other options as well, run perl -s classinfo.pl AZCompactList to see them.

the other alternative is to use a Hierarchy classifier, but here you have to provide the hierarchy.
