Could this be a unicode format problem? We had something similar with
Old English characters. Although I wasn't responsible for its diagnosis
or solution, we found it next to impossible to key in characters like U
+00E6 (latin small letter ae/latin small ligature ae). We could enter
them, but they weren't being searched for.

We ended up making a "cut and paste" list of letters that weren't
keyboardable from a standard American keyboard.

I wish I had a better solution: I'm not a Greenstone expert but I was
working with experts at the time.

I don't know the answer to your other question.
