|Subject||RE: [greenstone-devel] Information re: Greenstone Digital Library Software|
|We downloaded Greenstone versions for Windows (98) and a UNIX version ... both work well. If you purchase the CDROM it comes with extra examples that are not included in the web-release.
For the most part we have found its direct support for multimedia to be limited, but by creating an HTML "wrapper" for our multimedia files (sounds, movies) Greenstone can index and properly account for them. There are some extensions that I haven't tried that can extend this (and as Greenstone is written in "perl" it is fairly easy to extend)
A book worth looking at is "how to Build a Digital Library" (by Ian Witten and David Bainbridge, published by Morgan Kaufman, ISBN 1-55860-790-0 (paperback, about $50.00 US) ... very examples on Greenstone use.

Greenstone Software Project
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
The Saint Lucia National Commission for UNESCO is attempting to undertaken a major project aimed at the standardisation and digitalisation of the holdings of local Libraries, Archives and other Resource Centres in Saint Lucia. The move towards digital storage of material and information is supposed to facilitate efforts at aquision, preservation and circulation of “indigenous knowledge”, which includes a significant collection of audiovisual material, especially audio and video holdings.
We therefore wish to enquire about the availability of the Greenstone Digital Library software and as well about the capabilities of software as it relates to the digital storage of audiovisual materials.
The National Commission is aware of the training exercises, on the use of the Greenstone software, currently being undertaken in the Asian region. As such, Saint Lucia is anxious to benefit from these training programmes, and so we would appreciate information on how Saint Lucia, the OECS and the wider Caribbean region, can benefit from similar training.
We wish to convey our thanks to your for whatever support can be granted on these matters and we look forward to hearing from you.
